Last month’s ninth Midlands Family Business Awards rounded-off another busy year of V Formation’s work with clients on staging and promoting their events.
For V Formation’s PR Assistant, Lucy Wharton, the 2018 Awards dinner at Leicester’s Athena was a first and here she explains how the V team worked together on the event.
V Formation has worked with third generation family business The Wilson Organisation, which organises The Midlands Family Business Awards, each year since the Awards’ launch in 2010, managing PR and media liaison, and providing overall marketing, strategic and creative advice in the run-up to the Awards dinner when the winners in each of the eleven categories are announced.
The Awards are the Midlands’ only independent, not-for-profit initiative dedicated to celebrating and recognising the success, achievements and innovations of family owned businesses.
A record-breaking 330 guests attended the 2018 Awards ceremony, from the awards’ finalists, their independent judges, supporters and sponsors, including headline sponsor and the 2017 Family Business of the Year OrderWise. The Business Desk – the fastest growing business media in the UK – was the Awards’ media partner this year.
Derbyshire-based metal and waste recycling company, Ward, ‘did the double’, being crowned Family Business of the Year 2018, as well as the Fastest Growing Family Business.
How V Formation supported the 2018 Awards
This year, the team from V Formation were again on-hand to support the Awards’ team on the night:
V Director and Creative Director of the Awards, Hilary, briefed the sponsors who were presenting the awards at the ceremony on their speeches, timings and other duties. She also managed the event’s audio-visual, ensuring the films, presentation and music were on-time, on cue and played in the most effective way.
Our Marketing Executive, Amy, managed the Midlands Family Business Awards’ Twitter account, providing live updates on each category announcement, the highly commended businesses and the winners, as well as engaging with tweets from the finalists.
To maximise the impact of the PR following the event, PR Director, Diane, and I, managed the green room and worked with the photographer to identify shots and caption photos of each highly commended and winning business. Prior to the event, we ensured that the homepage and blog on the Awards’ website was set to update with the results after the ceremony came to a close.
As part of the Awards’ media partnership with The Business Desk, the V Formation PR team was responsible for writing e-shots to announce the winners and highly commended for both the East Midlands and West Midlands regions, to be issued by The Business Desk the morning after the Awards. Within 10 minutes of the e-shots being issued, The Business Desk received 1000 click throughs to the website, where the stories were also published.
V Formation produced and issued press releases tailored to the different regions to its comprehensive media database, achieving broad coverage including stories in publications such as the Express & Star, City X and Cotswold Journal.
This year, V Formation sponsored the Corporate Social Responsibility Award, which recognises family businesses that are committed to making a difference through their CSR activities and demonstrate how their values have a positive impact on their people, community and the environment. The highly commended CSR businesses were – Bumble Hole Eggs and Owen Taylor & Sons and the winner on the night was – David Manners.
